'Air strikes alone can't defeat ISIS. That job will require boots on the ground and those ground forces can only be supplied by the freedom fighters in the neighborhood.'
It might be added that one reason ISIS has made advances in Eastern Syria is because Assad's forces are not bothering to oppose them, instead being redeployed to fight the rebels getting closer to the heart of the régime.
