Christian villagers cast doubt on Syria jihadist ‘threat’

Syrian pro-government troops are seen on the streets of the Christian town of Maaloula

' "There were around 20 of them. They looked like Islamists, but they did us no harm," one of the nuns told the BBC a few days after the incident.

"They told us they were after Bashar al-Assad and his army, not Christians," the nun explained.'

"You've just had Christians murdered by jihadis."

Peter Hain on This Week went on to say that it was a sectarian proxy war financed by Saudi Arabia. Simon Schama suggested there is no moral equivalence between Assad and the forces fighting him.
