It pains me to say it, but Abbott has learned nothing about Iraq. He's taken the Islamic State's bait

Another commentator with the solution that, "We should keep out of this mess and let the rival Sunni and Shia groups settle their differences." He recognises that, " Iraqi Sunnis view the Shia militia as an alien occupation army that would more than likely commit plenty of atrocities of their own," but completely fails to mention that this has happened in Syria, castigating Kevin Rudd for "desperately trying to turn the Syrian civil war somehow to his advantage," in 2013.
The truth is that the ham-fisted intervention, the harassment of Muslim young men, these things may help to turn some towards ISIS. But the abandonment of Syrians to a sectarian genocide by Assad and Iran, and the labelling of Syria's suffering people as crazy Sunnis who cannot be helped; that does more damage than anything.
